About Us

Caroline Abbey

Therapeutic Experience: I am an experienced counsellor/psychotherapist and have been working for many years in a number of different settings, including NHS Primary Care, women's domestic violence support, and more recently counselling young people.

In those years I have helped many men and women from all ages and backgrounds experiencing difficulties with bereavement, relationship and family problems, anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. I have also helped clients with behavioural concerns such as substance abuse, phobias, self-harm and deeper concerns resulting from past and present neglect and abuse.

I offer a mixture of person-centred therapy , compassion focused therapy and mindfulness based therapy to help my clients gain a better understanding of themselves, feel more empowered and resourceful, and gain more control over their unwanted behaviours.

I believe that all people have the potential to live full and happy lives but from time to time we become held back or overwhelmed by our life experiences. Hopefully, working together in an empathic and non-judgemental way, I can help you overcome these difficulties and find a way forward.

Personal and Professional Background : In additional to my recent counselling experience, I have 25 years’ experience as an IT Developer, Database and Systems Administrator and Business Analyst in both the private and public sector, including the Aeronautical Industry , the NHS and a number of Educational Establishments.

I left home when I was very young and supported myself through college/university whilst juggling a job and family life and I feel that these work and life experiences give me a broad understanding of the pressures that ordinary people experience every day, and I think this helps me to empathise with their concerns.

Therapeutic experience: My therapeutic work is mainly of a non-directive approach and with clients bringing a wide array of issues such as low mood and depression, sexual addiction, alcohol addiction, domestic abuse, bereavement, anxiety, sexuality issues, relationship issues, long term illness, redundancy, childhood trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I believe that many of us, at some point in our life, experience feelings that conflict with and affect our behaviour and way of being. These feelings can cause us to disengage and perhaps become distressed, making us feel unsure of who we are and where we’re going. It’s not always easy to talk about feelings and emotions, but I will offer you a safe and confidential place where you can talk freely about yourself and a place where I will accept you for who you are and without judging you. This is an opportunity to talk about your concerns with me, without bias and in a way which you may not be able to do with your friends or family. We can work together to help improve your wellbeing so you’re able to make the changes in your life that you would like to happen.

Professional Background: As an experienced HR professional my work has been with directors, senior management teams and employees in large and small companies, from PLCs to SMEs. I have provided life coaching for employees who have experienced a loss of motivation and direction and don’t feel they are engaging in their workplace and/or social environments and also with employees who find themselves in a new and demanding role. During the past 12 years I have founded and managed successful businesses where employee engagement has been instrumental in promoting a positive work environment, productivity, motivation and team cohesion.

We all have the power and potential to flourish in the workplace, but sometimes employees may need a little help and guidance to maximise their ability to progress and succeed. With the appropriate interventions, mental health in the workplace can be sensitively handled.

Therapeutic Experience: I have worked with a wide variety of people to help them work through a range of issues including bereavement, general anxiety, social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorders, depression, eating disorders, sexuality, HIV status, relationship breakdown, self esteem, childhood trauma, post traumatic stress disorder, sexual assault, menopause, domestic violence and debt problems. I work in a person-centred way using a variety of talking therapies to help people to work through their issues. This means I won’t tell you what to do but I will help you to explore your options in a warm, safe and friendly environment.

Coaching Experience: I am an experienced coach and have provided life coaching to people who may not have an issue to “fix” but want to get some clarity and direction in their lives. I’ve also provided leadership coaching to those wanting to improve their performance at work or explore solutions for dealing with difficult issues. I am qualified to provide personality profiles using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and to use the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict mode instrument to help people to understand and develop their preferred ways of dealing with conflict.

Clients: I have worked with teams and with a wide range of individuals; in the business environment this includes executives, senior management teams, middle managers and new managers. I have also worked with individuals referred for therapy by their GPs or other agencies including people who are vulnerable for a variety of reasons such as homelessness, learning difficulties, domestic abuse and addiction.

I believe that we all have the potential to be ourselves and to live satisfying lives but sometimes we just need a bit of help to get there.
